How are teams formed?
Team Formation
- Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grades: Teams are formed based on returning players/teams and team or friend requests.
- 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th Grades: Players are only automatically placed on a team if they played on that team the previous season. Players who are new to the league or who choose not to return to their previous team will participate in a brief evaluation process. Coaches will then draft these players when teams are formed.
- All players will be placed on a team, regardless of whether they attend an evaluation session.
What if I'm a new coach/new team?
Starting a New Team
- Kindergarten & 1st/2nd Grade Coaches: You may select your full team roster.
- 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, & 7th/8th Grade Coaches: You may begin a new team with up to 4 players of your choosing. The remainder of your team will be filled through the draft process, which includes players who attend an evaluation session. Players who do not attend an evaluation session will be assigned to teams via a blind pick by the coach.
When are games played and when are practices held?
Games & Practices
- Games: Scheduled on Saturday mornings and afternoons.
- Practices: Dates and times will vary by coach. Coaches will be assigned a practice time and location by the league. Practices will take place on weekday evenings at a Wylie ISD campus.
HOW TEAMS ARE FORMED
Kindergarten & 1st/2nd Grade Team and Friend Requests
Team and friend requests will be honored as long as there is space available on the roster. When a player registers and requests a specific team, the WBL will first verify whether the player was on that team during the previous winter basketball season.
- If the player participated on that team last season: They will automatically be placed back on that roster.
- If roster spots remain after returning players are placed: Remaining openings will be filled in this order:
- Friend requests
- Team requests
- Players with no team preference
3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th Grade Divisions
If a player registers and requests to play on a specific team, we will check whether they played on that team during either of the previous two winter seasons.
- If the player played on that team last season: They will be placed on that roster.
- If not: The player will enter the draft.
For Coaches
If roster openings remain after returning players are assigned, coaches will fill the remaining spots through the draft. For example, if a coach has 6 returning players, they will not receive a draft pick until the 7th round.
**If you are forming a new team (for example, you and your child starting a team), you may begin with a maximum of 4 players. You and the players MUST notify the league before the draft to be recognized as a new team. This ensures those players are not included in the draft.
**The league WILL NOT honor any new team formations if notification is not received before the draft.
