Football Coach Selection Policy
Purpose
The WAYS Football is committed to providing a safe, positive, and development-focused environment for all athletes and families. Coaches play a critical role in shaping the experience of our players both on and off the field.
The purpose of this policy is to establish a fair, transparent, and consistent process for selecting coaches who demonstrate the character, leadership, football knowledge, and commitment necessary to support the mission of WAYS Football.
Coaching Appointments
Coaching appointments within WAYS Football are made on an annual basis.
WAYS Football does not guarantee a coaching position to any applicant, including returning coaches. All coaching positions are considered open each season and are filled based on the needs of the league, the qualifications of the applicant, prior performance, and the results of the Coach Selection Process.
Previous coaching service, years of experience, or prior appointment as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach do not guarantee future selection.
The league reserves the right to assign coaches to specific divisions, age groups, or teams based on organizational needs and the best interests of WAYS Football participants.
Coaching within WAYS Football is a privilege and not a right. All coaching appointments remain subject to annual review, league approval, and continued compliance with league policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
Parent Coach Preference
WAYS Football is a community-based organization built upon volunteer involvement and family participation. The league recognizes the value that parent coaches bring through their commitment to the development of their children, teammates, and the broader WAYS Football community.
Qualified coaching candidates with a child actively participating in WAYS Football during the applicable season will generally be given preference over similarly qualified candidates who do not have an active player in the league.
For purposes of this policy, "similarly qualified" may include consideration of:
- Coaching experience
- Interview performance
- Evaluation scores
- Prior coaching performance
- Character and leadership
- Commitment to league values
- Football knowledge
- Organizational fit
The presence of an active player in the league does not guarantee selection as a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or Team Volunteer. All coaching appointments remain subject to league requirements, the needs of the organization, and the best interests of WAYS Football participants.
The WAYS Board of Directors retains final authority regarding all coaching appointments and may make exceptions to this preference when deemed necessary to serve the best interests of the league.
Coach Selection Criteria
All Head Coach candidates will be evaluated in the following areas:

Interview Process
Qualified Head Coach candidates may be invited to participate in a structured interview conducted by members of the Coach Selection Committee.
Interview questions are designed to evaluate candidates in each of the five Coach Selection Criteria.

Candidates are evaluated using a standardized scoring system.
Each candidate is scored in the following categories:
- Character
- Player Development
- Parent Communication
- Commitment to League Values

Interviewers’ complete evaluations independently prior to discussing candidates with other committee members.

The committee shall be comprised of the WAYS President, The President of Football, and at least 2 tenured coaches who will be selected by the President of Football. The WAYS President will decide any split decisions.

Team Staff Structure
Each team shall consist of:
- One approved Head Coach
