Basketball Coaches Corner

Thank you for volunteering to coach in the Wylie Basketball League! Our volunteer coaches are the lifeblood of our organization, and we could do it without you. All coaches and volunteers are required to submit a background check.

MANDATORY PLAYING TIME RULES

Coaches are responsible for ensuring that all players meet 50% mandatory playing time requirements.

A coach who has a dispute over playing time must bring the infraction to the attention of the official and opposing coach in time for it to be resolved during the game. If a team does not notify the scorekeeper, the referee and opposing coach of an apparent violation, there is no basis for a protest.

The clock will stop midway through every quarter (1-4) momentarily for substitutions (not to exceed more than 30 seconds). At this time every player on the bench will sub in, and play for the rest of the quarter.

HOW TEAMS ARE FORMED

Team Formation

  • Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd Grades: Teams are formed based on returning players/teams and team or friend requests.
  • 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th Grades: Players are only automatically placed on a team if they played on that team the previous season. Players who are new to the league or who choose not to return to their previous team will participate in a brief evaluation process. Coaches will then draft these players when teams are formed.
  • All players will be placed on a team, regardless of whether they attend an evaluation session.

What if I'm a new coach/new team?

Starting a New Team

  • Kindergarten & 1st/2nd Grade Coaches: You may select your full team roster.
  • 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, & 7th/8th Grade Coaches: You may begin a new team with up to 4 players of your choosing. The remainder of your team will be filled through the draft process, which includes players who attend an evaluation session. Players who do not attend an evaluation session will be assigned to teams via a blind pick by the coach.

For Coaches

If roster openings remain after returning players are assigned, coaches will fill the remaining spots through the draft. For example, if a coach has 6 returning players, they will not receive a draft pick until the 7th round.

**If you are forming a new team (for example, you and your child starting a team), you may begin with a maximum of 4 players. You and the players MUST notify the league before the draft to be recognized as a new team. This ensures those players are not included in the draft.

**The league WILL NOT honor any new team formations if notification is not received before the draft.

COACHES

Only two coaches or volunteers per team. Once background check is complete and verified, WBL will supply coaching badges. And only coaches with badges will be let on sideline or on benches.
